an SMS "client" for linux ?

For years, I used sendmail and Pine - both text based email apps

Now Im wondering if there is a built in, or installable, SMS app
for linux, offering similar capabilities to these email apps ?

Ive tried gmail / google voice /and/ google-sms applications... however
none of these allow for "simple" SMS texting... for instance, where you
might see "just text APPLS to OurAppleFarm for availability of fresh cider"
or whatever... I cant do this via voice or gmail.

I do not have or use a text capable phone, but want to do text messaging
from my computer instead, complete with short code capability... whether
it is subscribing to twitter feeds or texting to people who do have texting
phones. Anybody know of linux SMS program for this ?

NOTE: the closest Ive gotten is subsription to online texting service...
however... all of these that Ive seen require you to work through your
"smart phone" number (again, I dont have one).

thanks

Actually I think you cannot send SMS without an account somewhere. Maybe you need to buy a phone, an online service or probably skype would work for you. But anyway, you need a provider and that will give you a solution or you can try to find a software for that service.

right... thank you... and it did occur to me that /with/ a phone account it might be possible.
The next problem Id encountered was, all the services Ive seen want you to verify or whatever
from the smart phone itself.

Something else Ive seen are hardware connections which link a computer to a phone in a holder...
not really what I want.

Maybe someone knows a service which specifically supports connecting/texting directly via computer, with no
phone involved.
