SOLVED - amd64 java for openoffice
 

I have a twin core turion on slamd64-12.2, and openoffice 3.x/ I can't get the database section going because it complains about java, and sends me tools/options/openoffice.org/java to add a jre. I try to add something, and nothing works. Latest download is jre-6u16-linux-x64.bin but no joy I have on disc
/usr/lib/gcj-4.2.4/ (which OO says is corrupt)
/usr/java/jre1.6.0_14/
/usr/java/jre1.6.0_15/

OO seems to think the latter 2 are not runtime engines at all. Everyone seems to be sending you elsewhere on this one and I am trying to find a doc to follow. Any Pointers please?

I had trouble with that for a few hours as well, unfortunately I can't remember which magic I did to get it right.

My OpenOffice options show:
Location: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre which is Sun Microsystems Inc 1.6.0_0

But I so to see I have three JRE's installed. The others are Sun Microsystems Inc 1.6.0_07 and Free Software Foundation,I 1.5.0.

If I see this I might think the other two were experiments which failed.

When I press the button Class Path, I see:
/user/share/java/mysql-connection-java-5.1.6.jar
which is obviously the java program being used for access to the database.

Well, I notice one thing:

You have a JVM (guessing=Java Virtual Machine)
I only have a JRE (Guessing Java Runtime Environment)

Now, presuming jre is not the same as jre, I need to replace one jre and one jvm with a jvm that works. I will pump that into google, and see what gives. Thanks.

Well, That last post was rubbish. Allow me to unsay all of that stuff.

The actual deal was that oo wanted a 32 bit jre. As I was stubbornly 64bit here I drove myself up the wall trying to sort it. I got jre1.6.0_15 in x86. It ever the 32 bit talked to a 64 bit of a different version, I felt sure they would disagree, so I attempted to move from 1.6.0_14 to 1.6.0_15. I had it in the PATH, /etc/ld.so.conf, and had several symlinks in before I got it working. Hacking all that, mozilla still dislikes the plugin >:-<<!

LOL, I think you're being a bit unfair towards 64 bit; your issues really sound distro specific. Regardless, 64 bit firefox and 32 bit plug-ins is a no-go. There is the nsplugin wrapper but that is not compatible with java.

You are probably right. I am having problems and it's getting to me. I wouldn't blame slamd64 for all of it. AMD/ATI lack of support for linux is the big one. The fact that slamd copied (32 bit) slackware gave me many headaches. They are sorting that, or have it sorted. All these extras(flash, java, pdf plugin, xine plugin, etc) are also giving me major headaches. The least change is a battle. I have 32 bit slackware and it's a breeze by comparison.

I had things like this back in the bad old days of 2.0 kernels and throwing options at stupid cards on the isa bus, and I was there when they were moving usb all around the place as well. I really didn't want to go back to that level for 64 bit but I find myself there. So I'm sore.
