Alternatives to X -query thru XDMCP

Hi,

We have about 10 thin clients (Linux Cent OS) connecting thru XDMCP to a central Cent OS
server running Gnome Desktop.

We use this as an alternative to Windows PC's, running Thunderbird, Firefox and Libreoffice. Done for many years now.

The network is 1 Gigabits switches and network-cards.

After upgrading the Cent OS server from 6.x to 7.5 using Gnome 3, it runs a lot more slower than before. Well Cent OS 6.x with Gnome 2 wasn't slow at all, compared.

I've tuned the server with more cpu's and ram, and even used iperf to see if there's a bandwith problem. Everything looks nice, I just think Gnome 3 is slower than Gnome 2.

Is there a better way instead of using X -query thru XDMCP to the server ?

Maybe something like vnc, nx... or something like terminal services for Windows ?

Regards.

Gnome 3 is orders of magnitude slower than Gnome 2 - not sure if centos uses wayland at all so not sure that comes into play. Possible to switch to 2d desktop that doesn't require a compositor like xfce4? That will definitely speed things up but may require training on new desktop. Very similar to gnome 2 though so not radical relearn.

Well, the idea of upgrading, was to get a more modern look and feel, so we still want to use Gnome 3.

Looking at vnc-server, it seems like it's most for concole access/remote management. And setting up ports for 5901, 5902 and so on, doesnt seem very dynamic/flexible.

Is ltsp.org the best alternative ?
It seems just a bit overkill, just for 10-15 clients..

My apologies - i actually have no experience with thin client/central server technologies, was just commenting on gnome 3 and my experiences with respect to resource usage and overall speed, having come all the way from gnome 1.
