Alternative to zgv for terminal graphics?

... or maybe a setup issue with zgv?

I'm seeing a peculiar behavior on a VIA system running RH 9 in terminal mode. I use zgv to display terminal graphics (which I also do on a number of Dell and CyberNet Intel systems)... the images display just fine, but on exiting from zgv instead of going back to text mode, it slowly fades to gray, with a ghost image of graphics which appears to be some sort of leftover X image... and stays gray. I thought it had been possible to get the "real" text mode back by going into X and back, but that's not working now (I've installed a number of different drivers - the latest one from VIA).

I believe that zgv uses svgalib to manage the display for graphics, so I'm thinking that's the real issue here. I've tried different display drivers without any difference in the behavior.

Anyone have any ideas?

if your using via igp chipset
say for instance km400 or other compatible chips, u need to download and install not only the kernel driver but also the x driver and the frame buffer driver from via.
this helped on my system.

btw .....have u had any luck with open GL and the via chipset

Hi, thanks for the response - I've been off on another project for quite awhile and hadn't had a chance to get back to this one. Part of the problem was that the DSL modem on the system in question had hiccupped, so I couldn't ssh to it for followup... anyway, thanks again.

This is a PartnerTech 5500, and it's definitely a VIA board, with all interfaces on the board... I'm not at my office, so I can't look at the doc for the specific video chipset - it's pretty involved, as it runs both the integral flatpanel and an external VGA, and it's also got a touchscreen, and the vendor's Linux drivers are only for XFree86, definitely don't work with Xorg. We really wanted to use SuSE on this, but the 9.2 is Xorg, and we couldn't get the ts working. RH9 is XFree86, and the ts driver worked, but the problem with terminal-to-graphics-back-to-terminal reared its head. They said they used SuSE 9.1, but I haven't been able to get 9.1 to install properly.

I'll see what I can find for the drivers you mention, noth for RH 9 and SuSE 9.1.

Like your sig... how about -... -.-- - . / -- .
