I'm having another go at my X11 xorg.conf file to see if I can improve the quad display setup and also solve the problem.

I am beginning to think that this is something to do with the 780a chipset not being a favourite of Linux. I tried the newest beta driver and a different xorg.config file and it suffers the same problem.

FYI, the xorg.conf file has no direct impact on the use of the console framebuffer that I am aware of. If anyone knows differently, please correct me...
I think that if you reconfigure your system to use a text-only console, you will be able to see your TTY1 console once again.

It's a long shot, but please try booting your kernel with
vga=normal
appended to the kernel boot line.

Yep, that's the same suggestion I made a few posts ago, when I suggested he look here. I don't think he's tried this yet...
