Here's my ideas
Did you run alsaconf? probably need to do that to have your soundcard setup
Sometimes need to add your user to a group called audio, or something like that, though I don't think it even let me access alsamixer without being in the group.
If you try to play some sound file through a terminal it probably will give you some error messages, post them and we can help figure out what it means
