Unhappy ALSA Problem

I have an old DELL DEMENSION XPS D266 with a Yamaha Soundcard opl3. I installed Redhat 9.0 on it a while ago and put the newest kernel (at that time 2.4.20-2.9 RH). Today I upgraded the kernel to 2.4.20-28.9 now the soundcard doesn't work. So I install it for the new kernel. Everything goes fine until I have to put the modules into the new kernel. Then I get

[root@PC13DELLE root]# modprobe snd-opl3sa2;modprobe snd-pcm-oss;modprobe snd-mixer-oss;modprobe snd-seq-oss
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: unresolved symbol schedule_work
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: insmod snd-opl3sa2 failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: unresolved symbol schedule_work
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: insmod snd-pcm-oss failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: unresolved symbol schedule_work
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: insmod snd-mixer-oss failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: unresolved symbol schedule_work
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.9/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: insmod snd-seq-oss failed
[root@PC13DELLE root]#

Why is this failing now!!!!

Kind Regards

André,

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000, and have exactly the same issue. Exactly the same errors... when I try to do the recommended modprobe commands. Since it's not just me, is there a possibility that the new kernel updates are no longer compatible with the current Alsa drivers? I have had to reinstall Alsa every time the kernel was upgraded, but this time with the same results you have. Also, I tried with the latest Alsa software, so I can't go any newer - for now at least...

Any help, suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

Rich

I got it to work! I used an older version of the ALSA drivers, i.e. 0.9.8!

Regards

André
