ALSA on SUSE 10.1 "crackles"

I've been using SUSE for a while now, but today, it seems like my sound is being especially "crackly."
My sound has always been like this, and I've just run alsaconf whenever I need sound. It seems that my settings are always lost after a reboot.
My worst problem is the crackling. It really distorts the audio, so I'm kind of starting to get annoyed.
I've used to forum search but I haven't found a solution to any of my problems. Does anyone know what I can do?
Changing my input source from Microphone helped a bit, but the crackling is still there.
It also seems that the left channel is the only one really crackling, and mainly when I'm using TiMidity, but also a bit with Banshee.
Maybe my left ear is a bit sensative, I'm not really sure. There is definately popping with TiMidity, though.

This works fine with XP/Vista.
