Alsa Installation Tips

Hi, I've been trying to install the Alsa Sound Server but I haven't had any luck. Every time I post in this forum, they don't even read my question and give me a bunch of junk that I already know and have nothing to do with the topic. I apreciate them trying but please read what I'm posting before you answer.

Anyways, I've tried following the instructions from the Alsa-Project site, and the tips from people. But no luck because they never explain fully what I must do. I have an Intel-i810 chipset with the AC97 soundcard. What must I do STEP BY STEP in order to get my sound card working on RedHat Linux 8.0 with the latest kernel release. Also, keep in mind that the last time I tried installing and using the command "modprobe snd-intel8x0" it returned "MODULE NOT FOUND" OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. Maybe I missed a step or maybe the coding sucks.

I appreciate any decent help I get. Please don't post something like "DID YOU TRY DOING THIS COMMAND". Because that never works unless you do it in a certain order throughout the installation!

I doubt no1 has the AC97 soundcard in there system and none of them installed ALSA!

I had this problem. What you need to do is this:

1) download, compile, and make install the alsa drivers.

2) put this lot in /etc/modules.conf:

above snd-via82xx snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-slot-0 snd-via82xx

snd-via82xx is the chipset for the AC97 card. This is in alsa-driver 0.9 +.
snd-pcm-oss is the alsa-oss driver.

3) reboot.

What you should get now is semi working sound support. This is as far as I've gotten on both Mandrake and RedHat. The aRts server will play sounds incorrectly, but programs such as mplayer and xmms will work properly.

If this doesn't get you going, let me know.

This is a free site, where members post in their own spare time. There is no gaurantee answer for your questions coming to a site like this. Sometimes it might be a minute or two to get an answer or several days. Having an attitude like that will only slow down your responses most likely.

I would most likely suggest dropping the attitude and be happy you actually got a response with actual steps as this question is asked all the time and you haven't been prompted to try Searching First as most likely there's already an answer for you on this site and or many other sites.

I'd attempt to help you out, but your response sort of put me in a non helpful mood in helping you out. Sorry to be so blunt, but I don't like people who give such attitude when seeking answers on a free, open forum like this one where many are only here to help you out.

If you would have spent less time crying and more time searching you would have found all these (i searched for "ALSA AC97") http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...der=descending

Also the 3rd thread down i posted step by step directions to get it working. If you think about it, most problems that you are going to bump into have been bumped into hundreds of times and posted several times.....it is much easier to search than to post and wait.

Trust me..my problem is no searching. It's getting decent help. I ask someone how to get to point B from point A. Then they'll reply with "UMM...TRY THIS...BUT IT MIGHT NOT WORK...BECAUSE IT DOESN'T WORK WELL FOR ME!" I've searched but everything I find either doesn't work or it has to be done before something else. So I ended up crashing linux. I had to reformat and reinstall kuz some guy gave me a tip that disabled all hardware including ETH, VIDEO #2 & MONITOR #2, & SOUND! So that's why I was pissed.
