alsa-driver-1.0.5.tar.gz or kernel alsa?

What is the difference between alsa that is supplied with the 2.6-kernel source and the package alsa-driver-1.0.5.tar.gz. They seem to be different.

I think the ALSA drivers get added to the kernel but there's a slight delay so the user space drivers available from ALSA tend to be slightly more up to date. I used to prefer the the user space drivers but since the 2.6.5 kernel I can't hear the difference so I use the kernel drivers now as it's more convenient. Your millage my be different though. It probably depends on the hardware.

I was asking because of this post, http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=187157 , that I was reading yesterday. It did not seem like his driver was availabe in the 2.6 kernel(I looked with make menuconfig). He did seem to find it by manually installing alsa.
