ALSA Doesn't like my card

I have been trying for quite a while to get the sound on a Dell CPi D300XT to work. It uses cs4236 and should work in alsa. It is running debian, and when I use alsaconf to try to install the card (I get the same error manually too), I get this:
Code:

Probing: cs4236 : FOUND!

Running update-modules
Loading driver...
/lib/modules/2.4.27-2-386/updates/alsa/snd-cs4236.0: init.module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including inva
lod IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.27-2-386/updates/alsa/snd-cs4236.0: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.27-2-386/updates/alsa/snd-cs4236.0 failed
/lib/modules/2.4.27-2-386/updates/alsa/snd-cs4236.0: insmod snd-cs4236 failed
Setting default volumes...
Saving the mixer setup used for this in /var/lib/asound/.state.
/usr/bin/alsactl: save_state:1194: No soundcards found...

And then it tells me it's ready. When I go and try alsamixer, I get:

Code:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
Can anone shed some light on this for me? I am in way over my head.

Is this the first install on this machine? If so, then maybe you should switch slots with your sound card, and see if that changes anything. If you have run the card on this machine before, then I have no idea, and hopefully someone with more experience can step in to give advice!

ugh

I have used it on this machine with Damn Small Linux before I switched to Debian but that was by manually configuring soundcore with the irq crap, etc. This is built in sound and thus I cannot move the card between slots.

BTW: the soundcard does not appear when I do pnpdump. Does that mean anything?
