How can I share files and folders?
As you can see, I no longer can.

I was trying to get minidlna working better, so installed webmin as it has a module. But, it is no good, the server goes invisible.
So I looked at the share options, trying to share a folder using smb, but I can not.
So I am stuck.
Code:

scott@scott-P5QC:~$ smbtree
Enter scott's password:
WORKGROUP
        \\SCOTT-P5QC                    scott-P5QC server (Samba, Ubuntu)
                \\SCOTT-P5QC\Pictures
                \\SCOTT-P5QC\Videos
                \\SCOTT-P5QC\HP-LaserJet-4000        HP LaserJet 4000 Series
\\SCOTT-P5QC\IPC$                  IPC Service (scott-P5QC server (Samba, Ubuntu))
                \\SCOTT-P5QC\print$                Printer Drivers
        \\LR-PC
                \\LR-PC\Users
                \\LR-PC\testshare
                \\LR-PC\Recorded TV
                \\LR-PC\Public
                \\LR-PC\pictures
                \\LR-PC\IPC$                  Remote IPC
                \\LR-PC\E$                    Default share
                \\LR-PC\C$                    Default share
                \\LR-PC\ADMIN$                Remote Admin
        \\BOAT2PC
scott@scott-P5QC:~$

Looks like there are some shares still on the PC. By the way, WEBMIN DOES NOT SEE THESE SHARES!
I have had to do battles with samba before so I have PTSD regarding sharing in ubuntu.
Anyway I feel like nuking the OS and installing ver17.

Is there any hope? Go ahead laugh all you want.

I am going to 16.10, then 17.04 then 17.10
Too many software issues sticking with the LTS release.

watching the upgrade, I see this error popping up a lot.

Well, I managed to totally kill it, foo-bared, nuked. The upgrade failed in the middle. Oddly it logged me out of gnome to a login prompt while doing the upgrade to 16.10
It went all wonky on the screen, then logged me out. Hard drive activity fell off to zero. I logged in and I got a huge flashing cursor and those 4 moving login dots but they were really large.
I suppose nvidia driver issues.
Makes me glad 16.04 was hosed, it was giving me lots of grief.
I rebooted and am in windows and downloaded 17.10 from here

Running on 17.10 now. yes it is beta still.
A lot of the gnome extensions do not work.

Oddly, gparted fails to start.
Code:

scott@scott-MS-7596:~$ sudo gparted
[sudo] password for scott:

Chrome is working fine.
I installed gnome, and am installing kaffeine, and my shares are back.

I cant run any program as sudo, like gedit and gparted so far.

Solved by upgrading the OS!
