airodump-ng & kismet

I have a acx100 wireless lan card, which I am using with backtrack.

When i try to use it with airodump, it doesn't work.
When I first run kismet with the same card, and then airodump, it works perfectly.

The Error i get when running it without kismet having run before, i get the following error:
Unsupported hardware link type 0 - expected ARPHRD_IEEE80211
or ARPHRD_IEEE80211_PRISM instead. Make sure RFMON is enabled:
run 'ifconfig wlan1 up; iwconfig wlan1 mode Monitor channel <#>'
What is kismet doing to the card to make it work?

Is there a way to do the same with only a couple of commands, without needing kismet?
