Aim on debian

Ok ok so i am very new to linux very. So i have debian not sure which version i did the network install or internet whatever you call it. So i would assume its the lastest and greatest cause it downloaded by iteself. Ok so its on there lol i downloded both aim copies for debian and then i went to where the aim........ file .deb file downloaded and double clicked it lol as you can tell i am to into windows. It failed to install so i went reading and bought a book on it.

So i started using the command dpkg and also tried apt <---- (i think thats right or apl)to extract the aim.deb package but boy oh boy. First off f*** Debian not letting me log in as root. As i tried to extract my .deb package it gave me an error that it was reporting me lol so i went to root terminal and tried it again and 2 processes completed then it came back and said aim.??.??.??.deb pasckage cannot be found.

So as you can see this is a mess and i no longer like Linux as much as i did coming into this. So my question is could someone tell me step by step how to unpack and install. Also if there is a way to login as root. Also how to add group memberships to users cause i choose root and that didnt work

anyway i could type for ever and well i think this will be good for now.

craigevil 01-04-2008 09:20 AM

simple open a terminal , login as root then do apt-get install gaim or pidgin

vande012 01-04-2008 10:00 AM

wow

Wow all that typing i did for a one sentence answer. LOL but i do thank you, but on debian it wont let you logon as root, i was trying to get these permissions and still failed. Heres what i did i went to users and groups and tried to add my self to the root group . How come this wont work? I created my own group that had root permissions and then added myself to that group and still dont work. Answer me one question is terminal and root terminal the difference between running terminal under your name as opposed to root? I get so confused beceause i come from windows env and you can login as administrator.

We did this command i believe and it said that it completed two install processes and failed on the last one. And the error was that it cant find the package, and we are pointing at it so thats not the issue #1. #2. how the hell did it complete two portions then? it had to know something was there.

Although wwe did not do apt-get install gaim or pidgincan someone give me an example of a full command to enter based off defualt directories to enter this command or explain what gaim or pidgin is?

pss. We tried dpkg also is this right to depackage it? Also we get error that the package is corrupt, but i have got this error on two diff computers and different aim install

By "login as root", craigevil means gain root privileges with "su" (and subsequently entering your root password). You'll then have permissions to install stuff. What do you mean by "default directories"? Pidgin (formerly known as Gaim) is an instant messaging application that allows you to talk to people via various protocols like MSN, AIM, ICQ, etc (assuming you have accounts for those, of course).

craigevil <-------- wtf does this mean loli mean i am very very new so these words that a bbasic user would understand i dont lol. well as for that command being protocols im not to that point yet. Once i get the application installed i will worry about the protocols it uses

And i have done su and it ask for user name and password and we entered it. it worked but one question does that give you root permissions only in that terminal and your whole session will have root permissions?

Oh ok i just read your thing about protocols and what not. pidgin will allow communication via the aim protocol for example ? Is that what your saying that is all good but, im trying to install aim not use its protocol. That was my first project for linux i told my buddy we will install it and simply try to install aim. If its this hard to install aim then...............................

And dam it i dont want to just be able to su into root privledges

Is there a way to login at the welcome screen as root? I know this is unsafe nd blah blah blah. But 98% of my issues learning linux involves a permissions problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only in that terminal.

Yes.

If you want to install the actual AIM client, have you tried following the instructions?

There probably a way to tell GDM (GNOME's login manager) to allow you to log in as root, though I'm not sure where the setting are. It really is a bad idea to run as root all the time. Only use root when you need to. Edit: do you really need all those exclamation marks?

vande012 01-04-2008 10:24 AM

Exclamation points were bad

Ok so to login in as root is bad !!!!!! so can i apply power user permissions to myself if so how???? and power users is an example of a windows env so bad comparison but.... The exclamation points were bad but im so frustrated and i have tried everything that is obvious including the instructions on how to install it lol I believe that is where it said the final or third install failed could not find package! it found it for the first two processes in the install it completed

If someone could just answer my one question can you if you wanted to login at welcome screen as username=root password= whatever your password is ?

Nylex 01-04-2008 10:26 AM

Did you run the dpkg command from the directory in which the file was located? You either do that or supply the full path to the file, so it knows where to find it.

craigevil 01-04-2008 11:43 AM

APT HOWTO
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/ap....html#contents

Would be a GOOD place to start reading. There is absolutely no reason in the world to login as root, use su or gksu in a terminal, hell leave that terminal open if you must.

Using Debian Linux Software Packages and APT dselect and dpkg Package Utilities
http://www.aboutdebian.com/packages.htm

Code:

craig@craigevil:~$ su
Password:
root@craigevil:/home/craig#apt-get install pidgin

vande012 01-04-2008 01:03 PM

Ok going to try

Im going over my buddy's house to try to get this installed and then we are going to try and get drivers for his ATI 128 mb card installed <---------- does the driver thing sound like you can do it?

vande012 01-04-2008 01:50 PM

install syntex for aim

apt-get install /home/doro/aim_1.5.286-2_i386.deb

This is the command i am using and it is saying it could'nt find package? any answers?

And i did this from the root console starting directory was /

Nylex 01-04-2008 03:29 PM

Sigh. You need to use dkpg (and not apt-get) to install, as the instructions tell you.

vande012 01-24-2008 12:34 PM

Dpkg

So i went to aim.com got the aim download for debian. when i got the file it said aim ..... tar.gz.something im not sure the exact. So your saying if i use DPKG it should be able to see the package after that. What exactly is DPKG depackage? and if you would what would the exact command be? DPKG -install ...?...? im also sorry about the bold typing from before i was just typing when frustrated and i know now that it wont be tolerated. I know well i seen i could use GAIM and something like that and get it to work but now i feel like linux has defeated me lol. There is a download for linux Debian to be specific out there. There must be a way to open the package if i just use GAIM then i feel as if i didnt learn

samael26 01-24-2008 01:16 PM

Hi,
Will you please try to have a serious look at what the other members try to tell you ?
1. There is no need whatsoever to download a .deb package from the aim site, or whatever.
2. Open a terminal.
3. Type in : "su", without quotes.Hit enter
4. that will prompt you for your root password.
5. You'll see nothing when you type.
6. Hit "enter"
7. Type "apt-get install pidgin" respect the spaces between "apt-get" and "install", then between "install" and "pidgin"
8. You'll get it installed in a few seconds.
9. That's all.
1O Log in as root ? DON'T !
cheers

vande012 01-24-2008 07:25 PM

I understand

I understand that this command will install at least a instant messenger program to use the aim protocol or whatever all im saying is you can download a package specifically for debian linux and it is a aim installation. I want to learn how i can use this install that AIM allows you to download they dont just let you download it for fun. I know however that i can simply do it another way this isn't what im trying to do anymore i have made it a quest to do something with the AIM for Debian linux that they allow you to download. Im trying to learn not just oh here goes a command this will make it work and have a nice day. If i was trying to get it setup for that purpose this info you gave me would be great

Cheers

Vande kamps :)

PS. i did that exact command apt-get install pidgin and it looks as if its working then errors out and says couldn't find package

Cheers

ok im on the debian box as we speak here is the error:

subprocess dpkg-deb --control returned error exit status 2

And i have tried to download it thinking it was corrupt :( over and over again

Cheers
