Their not mentioned IN the site, but in the fglrx program you must run to configure the card. (fglrxconfig)

I personally use a Radeon 9500 on RH 9, and installed a few hours ago the driver posted there.

thanks for your help. sorry, i was a quick trigger just then, there is actually a file within the zip file that mentions support for the radeon 9000 card. i just set it up in 2 secs, and it works! but...

however, this driver also doesn't solve my "shimmering" garbage problem (except the garbage is now in colors instead of b/w pixels only).

i'm starting to think this might be a HW problem?

I had the issue with an older set of drivers... desappeard as of driver version 2.9.8 (current is 2.9.13_2). Do you have overclocked your board (in video card BIOS)?

EDIT: or do you use accelerated framebuffer console?

btw, the shimmering problem is this: whenever i move a window, or sometimes even when i just type, some garbage quickly flies by on screen, random rows of pixels appear and disappear quickly. or when i run glxgears there is a lot more garbage. and it seems to show up more on the right side of the screen.

if i take the frequency down with xrandr less garbage shows up (still some though). this occurs in 24-bit 1600x1200 mode (and no i don't really want to run anything under that)

i did try 4 drivers:
1- the default radeon support that comes with RH9
2- the DRI driver (i got it working with DR enabled)
3- the old flglx driver from ATI on a RH8
4- the schneider flglx driver you mention above

all efforts haven't got rid of the shimmering garbage.
don't know what to do but to return the card for something else at this point, probably a nvda or something.

how do i acces the VIDEO CARD BIOS? never heard of that. from my MOBO's bios config? hmm... probably not. any idea? the driver i just isntalled is 2.9.13_2 too.

Just out of curiousity... but you haven't seem to try the VESA driver (I know it is slow and stuff, but...) Try setting the driver to vesa in XF86Config (NOT the one created by fglrxconfig (XF86config-4)) and instead of the Radeon driver choose vesa. To make the change take effect, rename the file XF86Config-4 to something like XF86Config-4~ or #XF86Config-4 (so when X starts won't load it)

To me the error seems more a problem with the driver managing propperly the RAMDAC interface on your board than any thing else, that is why I suggested you VESA (you'll lose 3D accel, though)

Thetargos: AFAIK the name of the file matters little, i renamed mine XF86Config. i'll try this now, replacing "radeon" to "vesa".

Ok. Answering you previous question, yes, I had the same problem, but it was resolved in the driver... I don't know many who use a Radeon 9000 though, so I couldn't tell about this error with those cards and the fglrx driver (R200 chipset)

But defintely sounds like a memory (video memory) leak or mis-management error in the driver or the hardware. I assume you had never seen this in Windows or other OS?? So if you haven't then must be the driver somehow.

Another thing, did you set your monitor's hsync and vsync values correctly?

just tried this, well, the vesa driver doesn't want to come up at anything above 1280x1024, where the problem doesn't show up anyway. so it's hard to tell.

in any case, i do want DRI / 3D accel. this woudln't really solve my problem.

The other obvious solution would be to try and lower the resolution of your display. If you set multiple resolution in your XF86config file, then it should be easy: just control+alt+plus and minus to cicle the resolutions. See if the problem shows up.

EDIT: Maybe the resolution you are attempting to use causes som kind of memory leak on the board. I cannot test this on mine, because my monitor's max res is tied to 1024*768 :mad:
