can you post the errors you get? Perhaps someone can help you with them....unfortunately we can't help if we don't know what's wrong.

okay 1) you need to change the setting so that mandrake doesnt automatically log you in... it sohuld show a login screen ...
2) you go to failsafe mode
3) type afterstep or blackbox or whatever WM you want to run..
4) Ta-da!! the WM is running.. thers also ways to add it to your login menu next to gnome and kde and stuff... but you can always run stuff through failsafe.. those other things are just shortcuts but incase your wondering.. its in .xinitrc or .xclients or something like that.. im not sure [ i think one of them is for text and one for graphical... but i just run it from failsafe mode.. [which is a terminal...]! --hope i helped!! good luck man!!

yeah the .xinitrc file doesnt work i think thers also another file called .xsessions or .xclients or something that starts with .x and you need to set that.. [i read that in another post] but the failsafe has to work ... you can run all the other things out of failsafe.. the other things are just like shortcuts... BTW, what did yout ype in .xinitrc?? i tried typing blackbox and exec blackbox and none of them worked.... i think you need to type default=blackbox or something to that sort.. the weird thing is .xinitrc didnt exist before i created it so it cant depend on that... there must be another file too... weird... but failsafe works for sure..
