Ah! No, you don't call it that way.

If you have added exec startfluxbox to your non-root user's ~/.xinitrc, then as the non-root user simply type startx - that will start the X server and find the .xinitrc frrom which it will start Fluxbox.

At that point, it will either work or not. If not it will write some errors to /var/log/Xorg.0.log which we will need to see.

Your Xorg.o.log looks to be truncated to me. Could I ask you to do that again.

If it gives you a blank screen just try Ctl-Alt-Backspace which will kill the X server on most distros. That will take you back to the console, then copy your Xorg.0.log immediately after that.

Also if you could paste the output of the command lspci would tell us what your hardware is.

And finally, if you have a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf, please post it too...

Lots of copy paste!

Yea all that stuff is your X server starting... and apparently it did!

I am NOT the expert at reading Xorg logs, but there are no errors and I'd say the X server is running. The last message has to do with vesa/fb fallback modes - which I think is the thing we need to address, but you are using Grub and I am also not a grub person... so we will solicit any passing volunteers who know how to set vesa/framebuffer boot params in Ubuntu.

But there is one more thing - you have no xorg.conf - so lets make one and see if it can sort this out by itself.

As root this time, boot to a console again then do this:

Code:
Xorg -configure
This will try to generate a working xorg.conf by probing your hardware. It will create a file named xorg.conf.new.

Quote:
From man Xorg:

-configure
When this option is specified, the Xorg server loads all video driver modules, probes for avail‐
able hardware, and writes out an initial xorg.conf(5) file based on what was detected. This
option currently has some problems on some platforms, but in most cases it is a good way to
bootstrap the configuration process. This option is only available when the server is run as
root (i.e, with real-uid 0).
If it says that it worked, copy that file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and try running startx once more... if if still fails you will probably have more/different info in Xorg.0.log, so paste it... again.

Well if you messed up .xinitrc in your user directory, why not create new user & try logging in there.

OK, I think your X is running, your Fluxbox is probably OK, and with the xorg.conf you just created you should be ready to roll - except it doesnt!

At this point it is important for us to make sure all those proverbial ducks are in the right line, but I actually think they are (I have the sense that you are doing things correctly)... so lets do one more thing...

We need to pass the kernel parameter "nomodeset" at boot. To do that we need to edit your Grub file. I am not a Grub user so I just collected this from online sources - so if yours does not look like what I show here let's doublecheck before proceeding!

So, leave all our changes to this point in place, get back to a console once more, as root and...

Code:
Edit /etc/default/grub

Find the line that looks like this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

and change it to this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"

Then...

update-grub
If there are no errors, reboot and try to start X as normal user, one... more... time...

I'll be here a little longer but must leave soon - I'll try to wait for your results!

And about those duckies (if the above did not work...).

Let's review all the important points:

1. The non-root user has a ~/.xinitrc with the last line exec startfluxbox (maybe exec /usr/bin/startfluxbox - full path)
2. You copied or moved the xorg.conf.new file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf - i.e. removed the ".new" extension
3. You generated the xorg.conf.new while logged in as root
4. You are using startx to start the X server as non-root user

And to reassure myself - this machine was previously booting up to a graphical desktop (which one) before you installed Fluxbox - is that correct? And the only change initially was to install Fluxbox, after which the desktop (X server) would no longer work? If you did anything else, or if this basic sequence of events is not accurate, please let us know what you did differently.

I must leave shortly - good luck, I'll check back tomorrow!
