Question after installation my hdd2 got corrupted

iam having 2 hard disks, 1 is sata(primary), n the other is ata hdd(secondary),
iam having windows xp on my sata drive, i disconnected my atta hdd b4 installing Fedora core 5, every thing went fine i could do well in my linux n windows, real problem came when i connected my atta hdd, when the system booted(grub) to windows xp for the first time - some of my drives of the hdd2 went invisible(its 160 gb hdd with 5 partitions out of which 2 went missing) and even in the drives that were visible many file names got corrupted they were renamed some thing like this " soft@ares(old name is softwares) and movies to fovies ". all those files n directories are unaccessible, i am having VERY USEFUL DATA, my PERSONAL files and other things on that drive.
Next i ran partition magic 8 which on start told that there is some pb with partition table n it restored something, to my surprise it showed all the 160 gb hdd as type8 (r other)single partition but from windows explorer i could access my rest of drives of that hdd2.
i did not perform any other operations on this disk.
iam using NAV 2007 with up to date defs. so iam sure that it is not bcoz of virus,
once again
Linux and windows xp r on my Sata hdd 40 gb.
my corrupted disk is atta hdd2 160 gb with 4 fat32 and 1 Ntfs partitions out of which 3 fat32 are visible.
plz help me n thanks 4 being patient with my thread.

What do you see if you have a look from your Fedora? Start up a terminal and type this:
su -
[root password]
fdisk -l

Does it show all five of the partitions?

The best way to help each other here in these forums is to list YOUR hardware and describe what YOU did, what the error messages were and the kind of response/result YOUR goal is. Thank YOU for YOUR time.

I think that either your HD is dieing (how do you spell that?) or you have a memory problem. Did you take counter measures for static electricity before you disconnected the HD?

Repartition your HD and put your backup back and see if it works.

Question update abt my issue

thanks a lot for u suggestions
In short: Now all my partitions r visible but my data in 3 drives out of 5 drives r still corrupted

i could recover the 2 invisible partitions from windows xp with softwares like Active@ Partition Recovery Enterprise and partition magic, but the partitions which r visible and whose names of files and folders got corrupted are still the same inspite of using various data recovery softwares.
the names for 001phone folder changed to @phone and is inaccesible
like this there r many folders in my hdd2
In brief: Now all my partitions r visible but my data in 3 drives out of 5 drives r still corrupted
i tried by mounting from linux, some folders which r corrupted gave access but no data in those folders n some folders r invisible
thanks u.
