Affraid to update

I have had Mandrake LInux 9.2 installed on my friends HD, and you know when you select the packages u wanna install befor u install mandrake, well right after I updated his packages and stuff a bunch of shit went away, like xmms, a few terminals, LOTS of the games, the whole configuration, and documentation...I need to know if that might happen with me as well.

I just re-installed Linux with all the paclages I want..now that I know what stuff means on the installer, I am afraid to update or download any more updates becuase on my friends mandy 9.2, he downloaded the packages for XMMS off his cd-roms, and it deleted a bunch of stuff off his KDE menu, I dunno if it just takes the stuff off of it, otr if it deletes the programs as well, if someone could clerify all this with me, that would be great, thank you.

I have had a similar problem. I don't know what causes the menu to do that but (in my case) the programs are stlll there just not in the menu. Logged in as root, from a terminal run menudrake
[root@localhost root]# menudrake
Then click on save and the menu returns to the way it was.
