Advice on backup software for network
 

Hi,

currently I'm using Bakcuppc to backup my network and so far it's been ok but not brilliant in the fact that I couldn't restore anything without changing permissions on directories to write which isn't that great when you want to prevent access to them.

The thing I found most irritating about it though was the setting up of RSA key pairs as it's kind of confusing as you have to do it via backuppc user then switch to root and well it's a hassle.

Anyway recently my backuppc decided that it would no longer accept keys and considers everyone as invalid?

Therefore I'm looking to switch over and need some advice as to what is good easy and able to backup to hard drive. No tapes in my network that's why I need a selective dump to HDD.

I was considering Bacula or Amanda, Amanda I know is a server-client based software but I have no idea if you can use it with HDD as backup target.

So yes this is my dilema, any advice would be great.

Hmm well from a little research Bacula seems to need to run on every machine to work but it can backup to various media types.

Amanda on the other hand is server/client system and from what I've read uses a HDD as a virtual tape drive.

I just need something that is intuative but simple for 4 servers and a few desktops and that can select which part of the file system to backup.

My inclination is going towards Amanda but I'm open to suggestions.

Ok looks like I made a mistake about Bacula in that it is client/server setup - sorry folks just checked my apt repos :)

However Amanda wants me to install xinitd when I already use initd so I don't know what effect that will have on my systems?

Well looks like I'm stuck between Bacula and Amanda again? humph!

So which ones faster to setup and learn the basics of I guess is the question for now?
