Advice for New Linux user

Greeting everyone,

I am new to Linux and I am interested in reviewing the Conectiva 10.0 distribution. I have successfully installed Mandrake 10.0 but I am interested in the conectiva distro.

My question is: what should I watch for when I attempt to install conectiva 10.0?

The target machine is Pentium 3 750 with 128MB ram, SB compatible cound card, an 8mb Nvidia video card, and a 3com 3905tx Nic. I cd-rom drive & 1 cd-rw drive. It also has 2 HD. The primary is 9 GB & the 2nd is 3 GB.

I plan to format the drives for a clean install.

I Plan to install the English version.

There are also about 10 patches for various security flaws for this OS. Should I Install the release OS then patch or should I try to apply the patches during the installation process?

Any advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thorn

In general, if an Operating System has known security flaws that have external patches, the right path is to:

Prepare the install CDs.
Download and place the patches on another disk.
Disconnect the machine from the network.
Install the OS.
Install the patches.
Reconnect the machine.

This way, there is never an unpatched machine connected to the network.
