Advice about sqlrelay or similar

I'm analysing the possibility to use the sqlrelay software on a LAMP platform to take advantage of it's connection pooling features. I was curious to find out if someone else had used this in a production environment and if he/she cares to share some thoughts on the experience.

My second (related) question would be if there are any alternatives to sqlrelay. Some background info: Our problem comes from the fact that that the application requires us to receive a lot of reports from the client software through a PHP interface and update the MySQL database. The moment when these reports come in (they're all coming in the evening) the database is flooded with connection requests that only run a single "INSERT" query and then close, bringing the whole site to a grinding halt. mysql_pconnect seems to be inapropriate, as I don't want the whole site to use persistent connections and, firthermore, with this method the number of persistent connection does not grow/shrink depending on the number of requests.
