what about making a symlink lpr -> lpr-cups in $HOME/bin or /usr/local/bin?

I think lpr should be a symbolic link to either lpr-cups or lpr-lprng.

On slack 9.1, you shouldnt have both cups and LPRng running at the same time, so if you have cups running then you can safely change lpr to point to lpr-cups.
