adjusting colour in a scan-based pdf to high contrast black & white


I get a lot of badly scanned multi-page pdfs. I want to convert them to high-contrast black & white to make the file size smaller and make them more readable. Thanks!

Try tesseract.

Ok. what does this mean?

Code:
$ tesseract input.pdf output.pdf
Tesseract Open Source OCR Engine v3.04.00 with Leptonica
Error in fopenReadStream: file not found
in pixRead: image file not found: %PDF-1.3
% cannot be read!
Error during processing.
