Adding new functions in string class

Hi, I want to add a new function format/sprintf in the standard string class. How can I do it without introducing new class and extending the string class?

Thanks in advance.

This seems like a question for the programming forum rather than Linux > Software http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/programming-9/
It might help if you explain which language you are using. It might be obvious to some but it never hurts to include such details.
