adding menu entry in gnome

I am having problems adding/removing menu entries in gnome. I can do it manually, by editing /usr/share/applications but it won't let me edit entries in nautils when i do the applications:// I tried to chmod some of the entries, but it says it was a read only disk. So, i logged in gnome as root (i know its unsafe) and tried to edit the menu - still no luck. I can't even right click on the menu, and remove items, because it is greyed out.
on my searches with google, it seems the way other get around these problems is just by manually doing it. Is there a way though, to make the applications:// work? or maybe a gnome menu editor script like the kmenuedit, except for gnome? i also tried chmod 777 /usr/share/applications but that didn't work either.

any help is appreciated.

I don't know if this will work for Mandrake, but it worked for me when I used RedHat:
Do as root:
Code:
cd /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules
mv default-modules.conf default-modules.conf-no-menu-edit
cp default-modules.conf-with-menu-edit default-modules.conf
Now you should be able to edit the menu by pointing nauitlus to "applications:///"

I hope this helps
