Adding chapter markers to videos
 

Is there any linux video editor that supports adding chapter markers to videos? I tried everything I could get my hands on, including openshot and kdenlive (which last won't run under GNOME, however many kde libs I install, and I don't want to switch to kde4 which I hate), and so far nothing works. I don't understand where the problem is; it's so easy on the Mac. Is there an application comparable to the Mac's GarageBand? I am not talking about creating music here (though I may in the future), simply about adding chapter markers to videos, which GarageBand does very well and fast. I could go on using GarageBand, which can import .mkv and .avi movies, but eventually I should like to switch over to Ubuntu completely, because maintaining two complete systems including two full sets of backups is very uncomfortable.

have you looked at cinnelerra? Although complicated, it's pretty good

Thanks, bret381. Already tried cinelerra, and it's indeed complicated. Are labels the same as chapter marks? Besides, I don't want to transcode the videos, just add chapter marks. The task in question is recreating a DVD that's too badly broken for the error correction of dvdbackup and k9copy to work.
I already converted the DVD's titles to avi movies that miss a few frames but play continuously without crashing (using the terminal to concatenate the VOBs and avidemux to cut and transcode them), and if I just want the DVD my task is done because I know how to go on from here with GarageBand (which will import the avi, add the markers and export it wrapped in a quicktime container) and iDVD (which will retain the chapter markers even though audio and video will be somewhat out of sync), but I want to recreate the process using only linux.

I don't know of any, but google a dvd authoring program. That should do what you are wanting. I think kdenlive actually has this built in, but I'm not sure.

I took another look at cinelerra, and it does not seem to work - there isn't even decent navigation, only a very slow "fast forward", single frame and very crude and imprecise drawing with the mouse. I am used to working quickly and efficiently with GarageBand, but <flame> cinelerra seems a mess, sorry </flame> I can't even save the clip, I get a "permission denied" error. The only dvd authoring program I've found so far that supports chapter marks is mandvd, and its interface is a bad joke - I am supposed to go through the video at 1:1 speed and click at the position where I want the chapter mark. And if I fast forward, it crashes. Avidemux is the only good program I have found so far, but it does not support chapter marks. Doesn't look good. So I guess I have to stick with GarageBand and iDVD, and the quicktime player (sigh).

I understand. Personally I use Adobe Premiere, which does not run in wine, so I have a virtual machine w/ XP on it and Premiere installed. That's the only thing I use winblows for. I know there is a hack to install OS X on a PC, but I don't know if it will work in a virtual machine. Worth a look though I guess.
