Add user to `dip`

I wrote a simple bash script that creates a simple icon in the GNOME taskbar allowing me to connect and disconnect my PPPoE connection. One problem: my user account can't run pon and poff, as it is not a member of "dip".

I tried `usermod -G dip username`, and that changed all the things listed in `id username` but when I login to the account and type `group` that seems to have no effect.

I know GNOME used to have a nice utility for this, but it seems they made it simpler so that is is *broken*.

How can I add my user account to dip?

as root, edit /etc/group

Search for the line that contains "dip:" and append your user name to it.
