add/remove Ubuntu problem- no third party applications
 

Hi!
I have a problem with the add and remove in ubuntu.
I only have open source canoical applications.
No third party.

some of the applications just sat they are canonical like Firefox who is maintained by the Mozilla foundation.
What do i do?

Have you added extra repositorys. If not that explains why you can only see canicol supported products. by default Ubuntu only lists software maintained in house that come under open source licences (mainly GPL1/3)

To add community maintained software you need to add the universe repository, To add non-free (as in speech) you need to add multiverse.


Easiest way to do this is to go to system>>administrator>>Software Sources.

You will be asked to enter your sudo password (same as user password).

tick boxes you want to be able to install applications.

Firefox along with most canicol apps is taken from an upstream provider (in this case mozzilla) and tested and alterd to make it fit in with the ubuntu experience. Most big distro makers do this (Novell welll known for altering open office before putting it into suse).

Some distros give you pure upstream apps the first one to jump to mind is slackware.

I feel I should say that Novell (and other big distro) put a lot back into the upstream projects. Novell are behind a lot of tweaks in OO and the (limited at time of writing) support for MS's OOXML standard (if you can call it that)

Seems like a stupid question but the show dropdowmn menu is on all available applications isn't it

also can you find non-canicol apps with

apt-cache search package
or
aptitude search package

what about the ncurses interface for aptitude (run aptitude with no arguments) or synaptic.

Does synaptic say that registorys are enabled?

i think you didn't get the problem.
i don't have third party apps but i do have lots of others.


what do i do with that?
please explain

how do i see the size of an app?

OK maybe I'm not getting the problem can you give me an example. What do you want to install. what do you mean by third party apps.

aptitude is a cli administration tool for managing software (like apt*) it deals better with orphaned packages. It also has the ncurses bit which is like add/remove bust in a terminal.

synaptic is a more advanced version of add/remove and is access though administration menu.

ok, its not really a problem but when the show dropdown menu is set to third party applications there are no results.

Don't use Add/Remove. Try System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager.
You may need to adjust the repos, but probably not - use the search box to find stuff.
