Have you applied maintenance? The install version of a distribution is only good enough to complete the installation and update to current. In other words, there are many known bugs in the distribution CDs/DVD. After installation, the first thing you need to do (as root) is:
yum -y update yum
yum -y update

For me (no guarantee it'll be the same for you) I hated fedora core 5 (which is a shame, because i learnt on FC 4 and rather liked it) i now use Arch and won't be going back, it's bleeding edge with it's software and has a package manager like Fedoras yum but it seems more stable, and i have learnt more.
if you stick with FC 5/Yum then look here http://www.fedorafaq.org/#installsoftware Add some extra repositories then try
Code:
yum search enemy-territory
if it finds it
(as root)
Code:
yum install <package_name>

I've tried many other distributions, but I've found that I come back to Fedora:
- because of the many repositories available (making software installation very easy)
- because of the bugzilla, providing visibility of problems and their resolution
- because of their web accessible CVS, so I can see if they are going to be releasing a fix for a problem, or if a new version of a package is soon to be released
- because it's well managed as a business, so I can depend on it being around
They're not the reasons most people pick a distribution, but they were important reasons to me.

I'd like to try Arch Linux as well. The only thing is that its Japanese language support is mediocre (from what I've read). OTOH, Fedora Core supports Japanese pretty well. One of the reasons I'm sticking with Fedora...
