Using Acrobat Reader v5.0.5 on RedHat 8. When a string searched for is not present in the document, or the search is past the last occurrence of the string, the Reader exits with this message:
Aha. I've come to look for this thread, to grumble some more.
FYI: the "temporary" solution is simple: start the search from page 2 (or other page but 1). When the start is about to roll back to the beginning of the document, simply say "NO" to the dialog box. This solves the crash problem, but does not eliminate it.
Now the grumble:
This problem AFAIK exists on Red Hat Linux version 8 and 9, and mandrake 9.1. I've reported to folks at adobe, but they seems to be too uninterested to fix the problem. Oh, well....! >:-(
Interestingly this problem DOES NOT exist with Red Hat Linux 7.3! I have two systems installed on my laptop, and chroot-ing to the RH 7.3's root directory would run the acroread with RH 7.3's libraries. In this way, the crash was avoided. But of course this is NOT FUN.
The problem exists (afaik) with acroread version 5.0.6, 5.0.7, and 5.0.8 also. Does anyone have something to speak, too, on this problem? It's a very nasty problem! Can we bug Adobe folks to look into this problem? Acroread is an excellent piece of software. It displays scanned pictures MUCH faster than xpdf. If you have PDF-ed old journal articles (for example, Physical Review [ABCDE/Letter] dated 1995 and earlier), or any other old papers converted to PDF, which basically contains pictures instead of text, acroread renders it much faster than xpdf.
Here is the list of my (unsuccessful) attempts to fool acroread (somehow):
* use "export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.9". It does not do any good.
* I'll put out more when I have time
If you are still plagued with this issue, try using Acrobat Reader 5.0.9. It's fairly new (may 2004). I just installed it on Mandrake 10 system, and the failed search doesn't crash anymore. I have also tested it on Red Hat Linux 9 (which is also known to crash Acroread on unsuccessful search). Yes, it no longer crashes now!
