Accounting software package suggestions needed
Here is some background, I work for a company that sells big trucks and equipment to municipal and contractor markets. We also sell replacement parts and maintain inventory in multiple locations as well as having 2 service department facilities and mobile service technicians.
We are currently using an accounting package from the early 90's that runs on a unix/risc server, the package is called profitool if anybody is familiar. The system is beyond is useful lifespan and needs to be replaced. I am trying to push the virtues of staying away from a windows package, so I am researching options for a package that runs on a Linux platform. All of our terminals are however Win2k based and will remain so. I have many requirements for the new package that are too numerous to list but if there is anybody here that is in a similar industry that could suggest any accounting packages that I should look into I would appreciate it. We need something with excellent support and hopefully need to remain in the $50k-$75k range for the software and hardware. |
If you don't get any responses, you might try a Google search. You might get an idea of what is available.

I've been in the same boat for a while. I'm an accountant and I hate the "dummied up" approach of most of the Windows-based accounting packages. I've been trying new packages for years now, with no luck.
Unfortunately, I can't tell you anything about what's available for linux, because I just don't know. I'd be very interested in trying anything you hear about, though. However, I suspect, as is the case in the Windows environment, that my dream of writing an accounting software package for linux may one day come true, and will hopefully be needed. |
I haven't used them and can't tell you first-hand, but in addition to the Google search you might want to try http://www.findaccountingsoftware.com

Do they support any accounting apps? It'd be worth checking out. |
Not having tried/reviewed any of them, but
always happy with freshmeat ;) A few mature linux packages: http://freshmeat.net/browse/76/?topi...ilter=201%2C12 A few stable/prodcution level ones: http://freshmeat.net/browse/76/?filt...id=76&orderby= If you don't like my criteria, play with them ;) Cheers, Tink |
Accpac International www.accpac.com has some good products. They sell via authorized re-sellers. A list of re-sellers is available on their site.
Their products started out as a Windows only, but now support Linux. The product will work using IBM's DB2 or Pervasive Software's Pervasive.SQL as the database backend. Pervasive's site is www.pervasive.com I have installed it in the following environment: Linux server running Samba. Windows based clients. Pervasive.SQL loaded on the Linux server. Here is a link to one of their Linux success stories http://www.accpac.com/products/epos/ BTW make sure that you clearly and completely define your accounting requirements before you choose a software. Too many companies buy the software then find out that it cannot do something that is essential to their business. |
