accidentally deleted jfs partition
just pluged a USB drive in and it messed up the divice locations so sdc became sdd. I issumed sdd was the new drive and did mkfs.jfs /dev/sdd1 which was full of data.
the original file system was also jfs and I havent writen any files to this partition. Does anybody know of a way I can recover this lost partition as there is over 600GB of data on this partition that I cant realy loose help please berrance |
TestDisk
You could try this utility. No promises though. We have lost valuable data due to the JFS corrupt superblock issue, so the only thing I can recommend, that you migrade the heck away from JFS once you got your data back. And DO HAVE BACKUPS!
Oh yes, and BEFORE you try ANYTHING, do a DD copy of the whole disk. |
Had you (actually) deleted your partition, you'd have been better off - testdisk would certainly be useful. You might want to look at photorec on the same site, but I don't know if it handles jfs.
You might be forced to use forensic recovery - that will be time consuming. And ugly. |
found this http://jfsrec.sourceforge.net/ I hope it works. also just giving testdisk a go.
thanks guys for the info berrance |
Good luck to you, I really mean it. JFSrec didn't help with the superblock issue, but maybe it helps with this.

jfsrec is working :), the inode scan took over 24h to compleat but now it is recovering lost files.
Now I would say I hope this will help others who have accidently reforated a jfs partition but in reality I hope no one is as stupid as me to do that sort of thing. the funny thing is I didnt have a back up of anything exept my photo's. The drive I was sopposed to have formated was going to be a back up drive for all the data I deleated. Oh the irony. Thanks for the input guys, and if I remember I will post an update when the recovery is compleat. Just entering my 10th year as a linux user and still a newbie. :) berrance |
Nice
Good for you. I hope, you don't run into the superblock issue.

As it turns out I am better off for re formating the wrong partition and deleating all my files. I now have all my lost data back plus some files I thought I had lost ages ago.
Any way long story short, if anybody does accidently reformat a JFS partition use jfsrec. It may take a few days to get working again but it works. Hope this is helpfull to sombody else. berrance |
