Wink access rights on vsftpd server

Hi to everyone, hope you all well?

I have been toying with setting up an ftp server for friends and family to access. I already have a network server but don't want to risk anything happening to my files on that one, so I decided another server was needed.

You all know me by now! I do like to try things and play a little.

The state of play at the moment is as follows: I have decided to use a little debian/ubunttu distro "Debris" it doesn't take up much room and leaves the resources of an old computer alone!

I have installed the distro on its own ide hard drive with / and swap. The home file is on a sata11 harddrive added with the help of my new promise sata 300 tx2plus.

I would like to create directories in home with specific access to those I decide on. IE if bob has his own directory , he can't get to Joe's directory.

I am using as titled vsftpd as my ftp server on Debris. Can I allocate individual directories in home to specific individuals, or is it the whole of home they get access to.

Examples would be appreciated if possible.

As always your help on this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Bookie,

By default, bob is allowed to /home/bob and joe to /home/joe. They are not allowed to read others directory , Provided if allow permission is given by the owner.

"Can I allocate individual directories in home to specific individuals "

It can be allocated by default

update

Thanks for stopping by ZAMO, I appreciate the help . must have done something wrong when setting up vsftpd. I have followed some info I found on the net which obviously wasn't that good

It seems that my friend can get access to everything in the directory I created ftp-friends.

I found it hard to get info that was easy to follow for an idiot like me

Could I ask you a favor and give me an install from start to finish guide, making accounts, folders, passwords etc.

If possible, can you base it on making individual directories as discussed.

I would appreciate your help on this matter, so that I have my server set up just right.

bookie

PS once again thanks for stopping by
