Access Link Table functionality available in MySql?

Access has a very useful feature of being able to link to external data sources (eg a spreadsheet) via the Link Table functionality. This is great for a one-off query as linking to a spreadsheet is quicker and easier than importing it and does not result in a huge unwieldy database.

I have been scouring the various forums to see if this is possible in MySQL. Specifically I would like to run a query on a large Excel or CSV file on localhost without having to go through the hasssle of importing it. Does anyone know how this could be done?

Cheers

Hello,

afaik, there is no another solution than importing Excel or CSV file into some temporary table and then run query against it.

M$ Access uses it`s own proprietary converters to link to spreadsheets, or ODBC-backend to connect to external database(s).

fooks is right, you will have to import it into MySQL. But the other thing you can do is create an ODBC connection to your Excel spreadsheet. The ODBC Administrator has an Excel ODBC driver. I've never used it before so you would need to do a little reading and experimentation, but it should work.
