Access BIOS after OS is booted???

I will display my ignorance of modern computer architecture.

Is it possible to read and modify the BIOS from within the operating system; i.e. not using the BIOS setup prior to boot.

Are there any open source utilities to do this?

The reason that I am asking is that my PS2 keyboard interface died, a USB keyboard (cheap logitech) works fine after OS loads.

If it matters I am using opensuse 11 and an Asus L1N64-SLI WS/B motherboard. I have an RMA from Asus but really don't want to use it since I have four watercooled graphics cards with lots of hoses and mounting brackets.

An Asus tech said he has used this board with a Faltek USB keyboard. They must be out of buisness as I can't find them.

Thanks for any suggestions. Skippy

I don't like your chances.
Every flash utility obviously can access the BIOS - or at least queue updates for the BIOS to apply on restart.
Generally these run on DOS - in some variant of "real mode", although Dell have recently released one that runs on Linux. Being a proprietary binary I'd be (more than) a little hesitant to ascribe it as "open source".
If Asus can't supply something for you, I'd say you are out of luck.
