accents without deadkeys in openoffice

Ok, i've searched all over the internet (and this forum) and i cannot find anything that will simply describe how to be able to insert accents over characters while i'm just typing in openoffice (meaning, without having to use insert character). i don't want to have deadkeys, because i need to use those keys. can anyone tell me how to do this?

In open office 1.0.3
-Insert
-Special Character
scroll down until you find the appropriate letter with accent
-click ok and it is inserted into your document
