I think the question is, do you need to upgrade? Because if the programs you need to run in wine are running fine with the version you have, I don't recommend upgrading. Wine, sometimes, do some regression testing, meaning that applications that were running, may not run anymore.
So before you get into trouble, ask why you want to upgrade. It will overwrite the old version. I usually run always with the latest version of wine. I stopped using it for games though and I went back to Cedega, which is doing an awesome job.
