Question about updating libaries

some libaries got updated very frequently
what is the general rule when updating libaries ?
especially shared libaries.
cos you can't just deleted it
can i just keep the old ones around and pretend they dont exist?
or there is a way to remove them safely

can anyone shine some light on this point ?
coz it is a quite useful skill (eg: glib needs update so often)

thanks !

You dont have to worry about dependencies [libraries], your package manager takes care of that. In my opinion deleting libraries manually is not a good idea. One of the main reasons ,I switched to gentoo is Portage[package manager], couldn't bear the dependency problems in rpm based distro's.
