An rpm is a RedHat installation package for an application or library or other component. With the src prefix, it means that the package that contains the source files of an application or library or other component (whereas most packages contain the compiled components only).

A minor clarification ... a source rpm (.src.rpm) contains the components to generate a new binary rpm (.rpm)

Eg. installing myapp-1.0.0.src.rpm may install the following files:-

~/rpmbuild/SPECS/myapp.spec
~/rpmbuild/SOURCES/myapp-1.0.0.tar.gz

You could then edit the spec file or add extra source files or update the original source tarball then create a new binary rpm
