aborted compile: start again?

Hi
I'm compiling mplayer (although this could refer to any compile), following the instructions to the letter, but it ran into problems with vesa.c.
So, is it OK to simply re-compile with a new configuration (i.e. minus the enabling of vesa)?
I presume that in the second compile the previously created binaries will be overwritten. Is that right?

I would suggest to "make clean" before the new "make" to be sure that everything already compiled is wiped out.
