Abiword problems - uninstall and forget?

Dell Mini 9 Ubuntu 9.04 UNR
I installed Abiword from the repository because I wanted a medium sized word processor. After installing I found that when I clicked on a link in an email Abiword would open, not my browser. That's a big annoyance The same thing happens now that I've uninstalled that version and installed the latest version.

In addition, after uninstalling using Synatic my mouse is not always recognized upon restart.

Is this normal? How can I fix this? Thanks.

Linux systems typically have a setting for the default app of a given type---eg the default program to open a specific file type. For example, if you select a file and then "open with", you typically get a dialog asking if you want to make this the default.
