I used the ebuild to install alsa, alsa-utils, and alsa-tools.
xmms plays fine.
aplay and KDE's startup sound are just the first half second in a continuous loop. The error message aplay issues is on the website.
I didn't want to fill this post up with all the stuff from my machine.
If there is another trouble shooting command or utililty to run please let me know and I will post the output.
I also posted the Abit sound driver. I think it is bogus because the conf file has the intel chip on and the via chip commented out.
The KD7 is a VIA KT400, it has the 8233 sound system.
thank you for your help and have a good day
I get this error
bash-2.05b# aplay pierre.wav
Playing WAVE 'pierre.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 11025 Hz, Mono
aplay: pcm_write:1025: write error: Input/output error
the headphones only play the first half second, over and over again
Yes you can also use ESD or OSS for your sound.
look at the man pages and search for help.
It may also be worth trying to shut them down in order to see if the alsa drivers work - remember to unmute the sound in the mixer - the native OS mixer will do too if you cannot get alsamixer running. let me know.
PS did the ALSA install go well - any errors?
Did you recheck the installation steps?
If you are thinking this may be related to the mobo haveing an issue or not being supported - post a new thread like "Anyone got Alsa working xx board with xx chipset???" That way someone who has it working may let you know.
It looks like the via sound chip is not detected in dmesg [ only the agp radeon and the VP_IDE: VIA vt8235 (rev 00) IDE UDMA133 controller on pci00:11.1]
...although it does mention it in the grep_VIA_proc_pci
- my next question -
DID it ever work on another OS?
ps like I said above, aplay does make some sound, it is the first 1/2 sec of the file looped. If the wav is 10 sec then the loop goes for 10 sec and errors with the error posted on the site.
Thanks for your help
Best to leave it unless you think it might be the problem - then try backing it up [just in case] and remove the original or comment out the relevant info.
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers?
