mplayer is the one you want:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/

it plays everything that I can think of for the moment and supports all codecs I ever needed. Search this forum if you get stuck. Though, you should not, the documentation is pretty simple. It's also possible to install it easily through yum or apt. Also there's a bunch of threads about getting mplayer installed through apt-get or yum.

Good luck!

In adition to Megaman X post, you can install Mplayer with a new tool Mplayer Setup.

Kaffeine is another good players. It can be installed by "apt" and "yum" too.

I always use Mplayer too, and had no problems till now. I get's my vote.

Boby
hi there,

afaik, kaffeine is not a player. it is just a gui - front end - that uses xine.

I believe you're correct. Kaffeine is a KDE/Qt GUI frontend for xine. The xine/kaffeine pair is the only program that I use for watching DVDs. I like it a lot.

I think what you want to do is play AVI's?

Well to do that you need to get hold of the Win32 Codec Pack (somewhere on the mplayer site), this will let you watch AVI, WMA, ASF and a few other proprietery movies using Mplayer and xine.

Note that DivX and XviD should be playable by the linux version of XviD (http://www.xvid.org/)

You will also need to be careful where you put the codecs, if i remeber on my pc there was an area "/lib/win32codec" where they were stored

Just FYI, it is the /usr/lib/win32 directory on my distro.

http://www.sunstatemartialarts.com/debian_media.html

enjoy, there is a nice little URL for you that can take you from a nakid system to a fully running media box.

if you dont need it all, you can get what you need and pick it out.
