A web-based document storage system

Hi,

I want to build a web based document storage system for a small organization.
The features I need are:
  1. to store metadata about each document
  2. to store the document itself,
  3. a classification system,
  4. role-based, multi user environment,
  5. indexing and search capabilities,
  6. portability.

Do you know any software or a simple and reliable content management system that can be used for this purpose?

Thanks!...

1, 2, and 5, are a database ... you are hoping for an application that has 3 already defined?
4 is any linux with access control.
6 means open standards, xml?

Immediately thought of MySQL (suggesting LAMP) or similar. Especially if you are talking about static documents - users just access and read the things.

CVS also springs to mind - especially for collaborative documents and where you want (some) users to be able to modify and upload.

Have a look at KnowledgeTree. I've been using it to store documents for my business and been very pleased with it. The newest version of the open source branch is licensed under GPLv3, which makes it a much more acceptable in my eyes.

Knowledge tree looks pretty nice, I was just going to suggest a standard CMS (Content Management System)..

We are currently using a hosted service, Wish I had seen knowledgetree before we started our project last April. Although I can't complain about the hosted service.. less work for me.
