A small question in naming convention

1 - Hi, what does the term "rc" stand for ?

Like : mplayer 0.92 --> mplayer version 0.92
how about mplayer 0.92rc1

1 - Hi, what does the term "pre" stand for ?

mplayer 1.03pre
