a rediculas Emacs question

Is there something I can do to have emacs start up with syntax highlighting? I don't have a ~/.emacs file, if that is a problem.

Sure ...
If you don't have a .emacs yet, emacs will create
it for you - if you're using the graphical front-end,
enable syntax highlighting (it's called font-lock-mode
internally, btw) from the options menu, and then
(from the same menu) save settings.

If you're using the text-interface turn highlighting
on by Alt-x font-lock-mode, save it by
Alt-x customize-save-customized
(darn that american spelling ;})
