A Hard Decision: Fedora 9 or Ubuntu 8.04

Both distributions will be released soon. I am a long time user of Redhat distributions and I like the power that Fedora gives to users. At the same time, I also noticed that Ubuntu does good job at end-user experience and the interface is more polished than Fedora. I primarily use Linux as my laptop desktop. So I end up with a hard decision to make. Anyone can give me any suggestions or hints on this issue? Many thanks in advance!

I was in the same position till about an hour back. Now I can emphatically say, go ubuntu.
Fedora 9 didn't handle the wireless on my R61 laptop very well. The SELinux puts its ugly head up at every nook and corner but you being well-versed with Fedora, you should be fine there.

Its better to go ubuntu and enjoy super fast package management and a healthy community than to muck around with command line wireless card configuration for 2 hours and pull your hair out.

Just my opinion.

Well, you could easily try both Not sure if there's a live-cd version of Fedora 9 out yet, but when it comes, get Ubuntu Desktop disc and Fedora live-cd, try them both and see which one you like more. You can configure the user interface to be identical if you want (both ship with Gnome desktop, or KDE as alternative) so that can't be the thing you're pondering. I'd say pay attention to the configuration utilities (note: both give just as much power to the user, you just need to know where to get it -- what tools to use, what files to configure) and package management, plus community of course.

I would vote for Ubuntu because of it using Debian's apt for package management, but it's just my personal liking, not a solid nature constant or anything. And as far as I know, you can disable SElinux in Fedora, so that's not a problem there..

Why I would personally pick Ubuntu and not Fedora is because of apt, because Ubuntu makes multimedia codec obtaining easier, because Ubuntu needs only one cd to install a perfectly fine desktop (of course both allow for customization after setup, but why would you want to download and burn several discs instead of just one?) and because I just feel like it. Each and every one of those things can be turned to I'd-prefer-Fedora if you're a Fedora fan, so just try them out better use something you know than something you hope you learn to like, unless it's a hobby or you have tremendously much spare time for tweaking.

Why not just dual boot? I'm a die hard Fedora fan, so I don't think I'll be trying Ubuntu.

Just remember, Fedora is not trying to take over desktops like Ubuntu. Hence the reason why it's more 'user-friendly'. That term is only relatively. I personally find Fedora easier to use than Ubuntu, but that's just me.

Regards,

Brandon

You should stick with Fedora. The reason I say this is that I am much more proficient at Fedora and I'll be able to offer you much more specific help if you continue to use it. And after all, this is about making my life easier isn't it?

Ubuntu 8.04 is an Long Term Support release and will be supported far longer than FC9. For me the argument to try Ubuntu (first).
