Firstly, what distribution are you using? If you edit your forum profile and add it there, people can give you relevant advice. If you're just starting with Linux, I certainly wouldn't advise compiling programs from source when there are packages available for your distribution. For example, in Debian you'd just type apt-get install firefox and most every modern distro would have something similar. Much easier and it makes sure any distribution specific bits and bobs are set properly too.

For Suse, you install RPMs with YaST, if I'm not mistaken. You can get Firefox 1.5.02 from the Suse ftp site, assuming you have an i386 architecture (Pentium/Athlon/Duron/Celeron etc as your CPU). After you've got it, I think you can right-click on the file and select "Install with YaST", or something along those lines. If that doesn't help you, I'll leave the explanations of how to use YaST to someone with experience in the matter.

No problem. You'd think that downloading files from the developers would be the best thing to do, but unless you really need a new release within a few days/weeks of it being out, it's generally better to download from your distro's repositories. Reason being that the application developers just make the thing work, on its own, on any distro - then people come along, build binaries and package it for your distro, which as you've just seen is much much easier.
There's probably a way to have Suse search packages for those matching a particular characteristics (e.g. name, age) then download and install them for you all in one go. But as I said before, I'm not a Suse person so I'll merely leave you with the advice to find out for yourself!

shlinux,
Glad you got your firefox workin;
In YAST you can add file repositories, so that next time you want to update firefox, or KDE, or a great number of packages, you can type them into the yast package installer and it will find and download the rpm for you then find the dependencies and install them. a list of the reps are here http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=253645
Hope it helps, and hope you enjoying SuSe
Ryan
