A few software questions

If I download a file and it is in a zip folder, is it easy to unzip it? I like to download various movies and sports sometimes.

The couple of main programs that I use are below. Just curious if they are compatible?

VLC
ConvertXtoDVD
Jdownloader
Pandora
PlayOn

You can download a Linux and run it completely
from your CD\DVD\USB drive to check it out e.g:

Linux can do it all.

I know VLC and JDownloader work fine as they are FLOSS and I have used them.
